Remedy Insomnia the Natural Way
Alternative treatments have been efficient in providing solutions for insomnia and its causes. People suffering from insomnia turn to herbal remedies. Some prefer lemon balm and chamomile tea. These are alright because they have proven to be quite harmless. But for medical establishments, they should label these medicines as ‘herbal’ and natural. However, some natural and herbal remedies contain conventional medicines.
Some the herbal medications taken for insomnia include valerian, melatonin and kava, but there insifficient evidence from research to recommend them. A recent study that has been conducted by the University of Alberta shows that melatonin is not as effective as most people think it to be. Researchers have analyzed the studies that involved around 500 people with various sleeping programs like medication, shift work, jet lag and medication. They found no clear evidence that melatonin has a special role to play for people falling asleep faster.
What is recommended though are the relaxation techniques an insomniac can turn to. These have been proven to be the most effective. These activities require at least 20 minutes before bedtime.
Here are some examples:
1. Visualization entails a relaxing scene in your head. Try this before actually falling asleep. Think of how it will be like if you really are in the place you are visualizing yourself to be. The more vivid you visualize the place, the more involved your senses will be.
2. Yoga combines meditation, stretching and deep breathing. Daily yoga for eight weeks can already improve total sleeping time as well as the time needed to fall to sleep.
The traditional cures of insomnia are drinking warm milk before sleeping, taking a warm shower at night, engaging in vigorous exercise for an hour and a half at noon, eating large lunch followed by light dinner three hours before bedtime and avoiding mentally stimulating activities at night.
People with insomnia are also encouraged to get up early in the morning and sleep at a reasonable hour in the evening so that their sleeping habits will improve.

Avoid any drinks with caffeine in, don’t eat too late at night or watch TV just before bed. Chamomile tea is very good to help induce sleep. Get the proper stuff though (not the stuff in tea bags from the supermarket). It is available from http://www.creative-nature.co.uk

Meditation!
More than likely you can’t sleep because your minds races like an indy car on steriods when your suppose to be sleeping. This causes your body to release stimuli into your blood system that keep you awake…..
Meditation helps you clear your mind and put to rest all of the problems of the day so you can sleep fully and wake up to actually face them……
Of course you can take different roots and blah blah blah , just stay away from sugar or caffiene late!

Hello mate, I was the same – I made a fitness programme – so when I come home, I eat dinner then work out about 7pm for 1 hour. then shower and hit the sack.
By adopting a fitness programme, your body will want rest to recover, and also it will have a postive effect on your lifestyle – i.e. not sitting at PC all night ( I assume this is what you are doing). It’s a lot easier to goto sleep when you feel good about yourself – trust me!
It doesnt have to be mega weight lifting, just an aerobics dvd or if you have a running / cycling machine you can use while listening to your MP3s
Get a fitness regime going now mate – good for confidence and all round wellbeing.
Good Luck

i strongly suggest valerian root. it’s great at relieving stress and tension! you can get it over the counter and it’s a great sleep aid! if you have one of those "racing minds" or "i can’t turn my head off no matter how tired i am" then this will definitely help. you can find at your local grocery store in the pharmacy or herbal remedy section. start off taking 500-1000mgs, 30-45 minutes before you go to bed. now you can get this stuff in capsule form and it’s 100% safe (my whole family has been taking it for years and our family doctor actually recommended it) however the only downside is that the more potent the brand your taking the stronger the smell. and this stuff smells AWFUL! but it’s worth it. within 5-7 days you should notice a definite change in your sleep.
WARNING! i strongly do not suggest that you take Tylenol PM and booze, in any form or combination. the main ingredient in Tylenol PM and Advil pm, or benadryl for that matter is diphenhydramine. here’s what happens when you take it:
You can walk into a drugstore and choose from an array of sleep aids, offered without prescription. The main ingredient of over-the-counter sleeping pills is an antihistamine. Antihistamines are generally taken for allergies, but also make you feel very sleepy. Common over-the-counter sleep medications are Sleep-Eze, Sominex, Nytol, and Unison; they contain antihistamines such as:
diphenhydramine hydrochloride,
diphenhydramine citrate, or
doxylamine succinate.
In general, over-the-counter sleep medications are not a good choice because they:
Are not intended for long-term use.
Interfere with mental alertness during the day, so you should avoid driving and other similar tasks. You may also be at risk for falling asleep
Reduce the quality of your sleep by reducing time you spend in deep sleep.
Use over-the-counter sleep medications only for transient or short-term insomnia and in conjunction with changes to your sleeping habits. Be sure to pay attention to your body’s physical response to these sleep medications.
